Private Collection (2020)
Neel is a collection of 12 one-of-a-kind hand-painted porcelain plates designed by Hong Kong-based Italian designer Andrea Ponti. Inspired by Ponti’s recent visits to Rajasthan, in the North-west of India, the plate design is a modern take on classic Indian architecture, frescos and bas-reliefs. Geometric patterns and lines blend with floral prints and stylized natural features such as mountains and clouds. Neel, Hindi for indigo, is the typical color of interior and exterior decorations in Rajasthan and a symbol of its capital Jodhpur, the Blue City. Indigo highlights the nuances of the paint and the intentional imperfection of the brush strokes. The color appears dark and faded when painting, and acquires its final brightness and intensity through repeated baking at high temperature (above 800°C). Each plate features a unique design and various painting techniques. Different combinations of sfumato, ombre sponge, brush and fountain pen make each plate one-of-a-kind and give the entire collection its vibrant expression. The plates (diameter 25cm) can be purchased by contacting us at firstname.lastname@example.org (price on request). All the proceeds will go to Make a Difference (MAD), an Indian non-profit organization founded in 2006 that works to ensure better outcomes for children in orphanages and shelters across India. The plates were hand-painted by Italian porcelain artist Ivana Calegari. The photographs were taken by Italian photographer Antonio Muroni.
